MATRIX PRESS: Master Prints Exhibition

This exhibition includes approximately 40 prints created through MATRIX Press, by nationally recognized artists over the course of the past twelve years. The prints from the MATRIX Press collection represents a broad range of artistic and technical approaches to the print.

Artists represented in this exhibition include those who have continued the activist tradition of printmaking such as Richard Mock, best known for his cutting political prints that appeared in the New York Times Op-Ed section from 1980-1996 and Miriam Schapiro who was one of the pioneering artists in the Feminist Art movement to Tom Huck, known for his intricately cut woodcuts inspired by the likes of Albrecht Durer. In addition, Colorful abstractions by Arizona artist and past UM alumni John Armstrong show a softer approach to the medium with his whimsical forms, which often reference the landscape. Chicago based artist Tony Fitzpatrick utilizes 50’s style tattoo art in his color etchings, while Canadian Artist Peter Von Tiesenhausen’s boat forms float mysteriously on metallic fields.

Bev Beck Glueckert is a working artist and an educator in Missoula, MT. She holds a BA in Art from the University of Idaho, and an MFA in Printmaking from The University of Montana. She has been teaching classes and workshops for adults and children for 20 years. Bev has taught as an adjunct faculty in drawing and printmaking at The University of Montana and is a current member of the Montana Artists Caravan and the SALTMINE artists group.

Tom Huck

Tom Huck was born in 1971 in Farmington, MO. He attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis in 1995. Since 1995, he has exhibited on a national and international level, and he has lectured widely across the U.S. about his work. His woodcut prints are included in numerous public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Spencer Museum of Art, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Fogg Art Museum, and New York Public Library. He now lives and works in St. Louis, MO where he runs his own press, Evil Prints.

”I made my decision long ago not to confine myself to any particular artistic approach or aesthetic philosophy. Picasso’s attitude toward creativity and work probably influenced me as much as that of any artist. He saw his art as an ongoing investigation, and was always ready to either analyze a single topic with endless variations or, if necessary, to change his approach and subject matter overnight. I saw Picasso’s creative flexibility as the freedom that was unique to Modernism. The Modern artist was for me an artist whose work was neither dictated by individual partons, a single style of the market place or traditional notions of ’fine’ and ’popular’ art; but whose expression could grow and change along with the couse of the artist’s life experiences and interest.... Despite the variation of my content and style, I have been largely committed to the traditional principles of design and composition. John Armstrong

John Armstrong is a master printer, fine art framer, artist, and exhibition designer. He holds an M.F.A. from the University of Montana (1970) and has extensive experience in the arts, including printmaking, curation, and instruction. Some of the positions he has held include: Director - Yellowstone Art Center Curator - Arizona Commission on the Arts Visual Art Manager - Scottsdale Center for the Arts Instructor - University of Montana and South Dakota State University John has been very active in the community and has participated on the Board of Directors, for institutions such as the Western Museums Association, Phoenix Arts Commission, and the Arizona State University Art Museum.

Professor Anderson was born in Canby, Minnesota in 1949. He studied at the University of South Dakota, from which he earned his B. F. A. in 1973. Mr. Anderson began graduate studies at the University of Nebraska and received his MFA from the University of Kentucky in 1981. He was an Artist-In-The-Schools resident for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Commission from 1977-80. From 1987 through 2000 he taught at the University of South Dakota and served as Chair of the Department of Art. He has also been a professor at the University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, and the University of Wisconsin Center, Marsfield. His work has been included in over 100 exhibits, 30 invitational print portfolios, and more than 30 public and private collections.
“My work is an activity of investigation. It is about the way objects/surfaces engage or break up the environment. I am interested in illusion of material configuration and how it leads me to learn something new. I strive more to understand than to be understood.”

"A decade of personal and political struggle with feminist issues crystallized in her pineering and colaborative involvement in Womanhouse. Co-directing the Feminist Art Program with Judy Chicago at the time (1970), they started off the school year by involving their students in a project wihich would allow them to project all their dreams and fantasises by creating an exclusively female enviroment in an old house. After renovating teh house, they transformed it with performance and art works which dealt with specifically feminist issues. They used this explorative process as a means of restructuring their identities as women artists in a patriarchal (art) world...

Since then, Miriam Shapiro has been giving the history of women's 'covert' art a brightly lit showcase. The once-tabooed scraps; seequins, buttons, threads, rickrack, spangles, yarn; silk, taffeta, cotton, burlap, and wool, were excavated from the musty attics and dredged from the dark closets of art history. Now, they are assembled and coordinated with emotional and creative thought into 'femmages.' Having taken embroidered upholstery out of the parlor, quilts off beds, clothing off hangers, scrapbooks out of trunks, and tapestries from beneath our feet, Schapiro reeducates us about a history of buried art, women's art." Richard Mock (1944 – July 28, 2006) was a printmaker, painter, sculptor, and editorial cartoonist. Mock was best known for his linocut illustrations that appeared on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times from 1980 through 1996. [1]
Born in 1944 in Long Beach, California, Mock earned his bachelor's degree, studying lithography and block printing, at the University of Michigan. Settling in New York City in 1968, Mock had exhibitions at 112 Greene Street, The Whitney (in 1973), Exit Art, and his most recent show at the Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn. In addition, Mock's art frequently appeared on the covers of the magazines Fifth Estate, Alternative Press Review and Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed.

Richard Mock syndicated his linocut editorial images to 55 newspapers, nationally and internationally and appears in Populi the United Nations Population Fund periodical.

Richard Mock, a painter and sculptor whose interest in politics led to a second career as an editorial cartoonist, died on July 28 in Brooklyn, where he lived. He was 61.
His death followed a long illness, said his companion, Roberta Waddell, curator of prints at the New York Public Library.
Mr. Mock was a lifelong painter whose work ranged from a cartoonish, politically charged Neo-Expressionism through portraiture and self-portraiture to bright, paint-laden abstractions. But he was best known for the satiric linocut illustrations on social and political issues that appeared on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times from 1980 to 1996, in other New York-based newspapers and in worldwide publications.
Notable for their sharp wit and bold, black-on-white forms, these linoleum prints reflected the influence of the German Expressionist Max Beckmann (1884-1950) and the Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913).
In the late 1990’s, Mr. Mock’s social commentary segued into three dimensions with his “Money Lures” sculpture series, which consisted of large fishing lures made of commercially shredded American currency.
Born in Long Beach, Calif., in 1944, Mr. Mock learned lithography and block printing at the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree on a football scholarship in 1965. He settled in New York in 1968, had his first solo exhibition at 112 Greene Street, the loosely run artists’ cooperative in SoHo, in 1972, and was included in the 1973 Whitney Biennial. In 1980, Mr. Mock participated in the “Times Square Show,” which is often seen as the starting point of the East Village art scene, and he was also the official portrait painter of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Mr. Mock was frequently involved with children’s art projects and taught art at Public School 6 in Manhattan from 1998 to 2002. The New York alternative space Exit Art held a survey of his work in 1986. In his most recent New York exhibition, at the Sideshow Gallery, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2004, his prints were shown with those of several Mexican political printmakers, including Posada.

Peter Von Tiesenhausen completed a suite of prints entitled "Ether", during his week-long visit. The completed suite, included individual portfolio boxes, with screened title page, collaphon and seven relief rolled photo etchings, printed on aluminum foil and chine colled to Black Rives BFK paper.

Artist's Biography

Peter von Tiesenhausen has experienced the land around his home for 40 of his 46
years. His travels have taken him to 6 continents and he has worked and lived in the
far north and the far south. He attended the Alberta College of Art in 1979 and 1981
and has been a full time practicing visual artist since 1990. He has exhibited and
lectured widely across Canada as well as in Europe and the United States. He has
had over 35 solo and many group exhibitions over the last 15 years. The land in which
he lives constitutes his primary and ongoing artwork and in 1995 he claimed copyright over that land. He has been successful on several occasions defending this artwork against the incursions of other corporate interests. His work has been widely reviewed and the subject of 2 national television documentaries including a one hour award winning film "Elemental" produced in 2000 for "Adrienne Clarkson Presents".

His practice includes painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, event, video and on occasion, performance.
